They provide commercial energy to over 400,000 UK businesses, providing every customer with a service to suit their individual energy supply needs.<\/p><h2>\u00a0<\/h2><h2>Background<\/h2><p>British Gas recruits around 1,500 people per year. Therefore something had to be done to improve the effectiveness of their recruitment process.<\/p><p>Our innovative, values-driven approach helped British Gas\u00a0<strong> more than halve the cost of hiring<\/strong>, while simultaneously <strong>increasing diversity in applicants<\/strong>\u00a0 and \u00a0<strong>improving candidate quality by more than 50%.<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c265c18 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"16c389e\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-72e27b2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"72e27b2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2>Aims<\/h2><p>Previously a combination of inconsistent candidate quality and operational urgency led to recruitment decisions being made under pressure, which was causing some performance and retention issues. This meant rolling out a generic, off-the-shelf approach to e-recruitment would not necessarily fix problem.<\/p><p>We started by asking their recruitment teams the all important question: \u201cWhat do you want e-recruitment to do for you?\u201d By simply asking this question it became clear that the success of e-recruitment could be summed up in one word: \u201cvalues\u201d.<\/p><p>The rationale was beautifully simple \u2013 Focusing on values rather than just conventional competencies would identify and inspire candidates who shared similar values.<\/p><p>This improved \u2018cultural fit\u2019 would not only mean that they were more likely to make the grade, it would also mean they were more likely to accept a job offer, fit in, perform, deliver a better customer experience and remain within BGS.<\/p><p>In other words, this approach would improve both offer and acceptance rates in the short term; whilst also improving staff retention, increasing productivity, and enhancing customer experience in the long term.<\/p><h2>\u00a0<\/h2><h2>Our Approach<\/h2><p>Following the successful roll-out of an internal \u2018refer a friend\u2019 campaign, backed up with ingenious database-driven \u2018job alerts\u2019, British Gas were not short of applicants for vacancies the moment they became available, but the volume of candidates was stretching the HR department and this added to the urgency of rolling out online assessment and selection.<\/p><p>We provided the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clevry.com\/en\/resources\/psychometric-test\/\">psychometric test<\/a> design expertise to take the output of the scoping discussions and develop a new values-based\u00a0 \u00a0online assessment platform.<\/p><p>Candidates now experience a customer-focused online problem-solving challenge that communicates the British Gas values and assesses reasoning and decision making, using bespoke content based on real job demands. The assessment therefore implicitly communicates the values of the business in the context of the demands of the roles.<\/p><p>The online <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clevry.com\/en\/platform\/assessments\/personality-questionnaires\/\">personality questionnaires<\/a> measured the degree of fit between the candidate\u2019s values and motivations vs the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clevry.com\/en\/blog\/8-advantages-of-a-well-defined-organisational-culture\/\">organisational culture<\/a> and values. The results of the personality questionnaire feed directly into subsequent second-round assessments by providing interview questions tailored for each candidate and a full values-based profile.<\/p><p>Throughout the development process the British Gas recruiters sent regular updates to ensure that the buzz and excitement was maintained within the business.<\/p><h2 data-fontsize=\"34\" data-lineheight=\"47\">\u00a0<\/h2><h2 data-fontsize=\"34\" data-lineheight=\"47\">The Results<\/h2><p>When the new values-based approach went live, the first noticeable change was a dramatic reduction in the time associated with managing the increased application volumes.<\/p><p>Before the change all assessment centres had a ratio of four candidates per vacancy as a matter of policy.
