A candidate might exaggerate certain personality traits, ask someone else to complete an ability test or use external resources to improve their score.

Candidates may also approach psychometric assessments with suspicion. Some believe the test is designed to catch them out and that they need to identify the “correct” answers to progress through the recruitment process.

The reality is more balanced. A determined candidate can attempt to cheat almost any remote assessment. No assessment provider can guarantee that dishonest behaviour will never occur. However, carefully designed psychometric tests can make cheating difficult, identify behaviour that may require further investigation and reduce the candidate’s motivation to manipulate the assessment in the first place.

At Clevry, we use several measures to encourage honest responses and help employers evaluate the reliability of assessment results. These include:

Clear instructions and candidate guidance

Randomised item banks

Test verification

Impression management measures

Browser activity monitoring

Copy-and-paste restrictions and detection

Screenshot attempt detection

Guidance for interpreting unusual results

These measures should form part of a structured recruitment process. Psychometric results provide valuable evidence, but they should be considered alongside interviews, experience, qualifications, references and other relevant information.

1. Give candidates clarity about the assessment

One of the most effective ways to reduce cheating is to remove the perceived need for it.

Candidates are more likely to respond honestly when they understand:

Why they have been asked to complete an assessment

What the assessment measures

How their results will be used

Whether there are right or wrong answers

What support or reasonable adjustments are available

What behaviour may be monitored during the assessment

At Clevry, we value the candidate experience and want people to feel comfortable completing psychometric assessments. When candidates understand the purpose of the exercise and see that the process is relevant and fair, they are less likely to look for ways around it.

Before beginning a personality questionnaire, candidates should understand that the employer wants to learn about their genuine preferences and behavioural tendencies. There is no universally perfect personality profile. A trait that is valuable in one role may be less relevant in another, while strengths can become risks when taken too far.

Trying to construct an “ideal” personality can therefore produce an inconsistent or unrealistic profile. Candidates are better served by describing how they usually think, feel and behave.

Before an ability test, candidates should also receive clear information about the conditions. This may include whether they can use a calculator or rough paper, how long the test will take and whether the result may later be verified.

Candidates should also know how to request reasonable adjustments for a disability, health condition or accessibility requirement. Adjustments may include additional time, alternative presentation formats or other changes appropriate to the individual and assessment.

Clear instructions, practice questions and realistic expectations can reduce anxiety. This matters because anxiety can affect performance and may also encourage candidates to search for unauthorised assistance.

2. Use randomised item banks

All our cognitive ability tests use randomised item banks. Questions are selected from a larger collection rather than being presented as one fixed test in an identical order for every candidate.

Item banks can be updated over time, further limiting the usefulness of copied questions or answer sheets.

This makes several common cheating methods less effective. Even if a candidate has previously seen some assessment questions, they are unlikely to receive the same combination in the same order. Two candidates completing the same type of ability assessment may encounter different questions while still being assessed against the same underlying capability.

Randomisation also makes it harder for candidates to share complete sets of answers. A list obtained from another person may be irrelevant to the test they receive.

Candidates may still benefit from legitimate preparation. Familiarising themselves with the question format, practising under timed conditions and improving their numerical, verbal or abstract reasoning skills can help them perform more confidently. That is preparation rather than cheating.

The distinction is straightforward. Preparation develops the candidate’s own ability to complete the assessment. Cheating substitutes outside assistance for the candidate’s own performance.

3. Monitor when candidates leave the assessment tab

During a remote assessment, a candidate may try to leave the test to search for an answer, consult another person or open an external tool.

Our anti-cheating functionality can detect when a candidate clicks away from the open assessment tab. This provides employers with additional information about what occurred during the test session.

The platform does not physically prevent a candidate from clicking onto another browser tab or window. It records or flags relevant activity so that it can be reviewed.

Leaving the assessment tab does not automatically prove cheating. There may be an innocent explanation, such as:

A system notification appearing

An accidental click

A technical problem

An accessibility tool requiring another window

A candidate attempting to contact support

An interruption during the assessment

The information should therefore be treated as an indicator rather than a verdict. A single brief departure may mean very little. Repeated or extended instances, particularly at points where difficult questions were being answered, may justify closer examination.

The purpose of browser activity monitoring is to give hiring teams better evidence. It should support human judgement, not replace it.

4. Detect or restrict copying and pasting

Copying and pasting can be used to move assessment content into a search engine, AI tool, messaging application or another external resource.

For some Clevry tests, copy-and-paste functionality is disabled. This makes it harder for candidates to extract a question directly from the assessment or insert content from elsewhere.

Copying and pasting may not be disabled across every test. Where applicable, the system can detect relevant behaviour and make it visible for review.

Again, this should not be presented as absolute prevention. A technical restriction can deter a common form of cheating, while detection provides an additional signal when suspicious activity takes place.

Employers should interpret the information in context. Copy-and-paste activity may be concerning during a timed cognitive ability test, but different considerations could apply to another assessment format or to candidates using certain accessibility tools.

Assessment security should remain proportionate to the risk associated with the role and the decision being made.

5. Detect screenshot attempts

Candidates may attempt to take screenshots so that questions can be shared, stored or answered with outside assistance.

The Clevry assessment platform can detect screenshot attempts made during an assessment. This helps protect assessment content and can alert the hiring team to behaviour that may need further investigation.

As with tab monitoring, screenshot detection is not the same as making screenshots technically impossible in every circumstance. A candidate may still attempt to capture content. The value of the anti-cheating measure lies in detecting the behaviour and creating a record that can inform the employer’s decision.

A screenshot attempt may be more difficult to explain as an accidental action than a single click away from the test. Even so, employers should avoid making an immediate decision based on one data point. They should review the circumstances, consider the rest of the assessment session and give the candidate an opportunity to explain where appropriate.

6. Verify test results

If an employer is concerned that a candidate did not complete an ability test independently, they can ask the individual to take a second assessment under supervised conditions.

Clevry’s verification test is shorter than the original assessment and can be administered in person or under controlled conditions. Its purpose is to check whether the candidate performs at a broadly comparable level when their identity and testing environment can be confirmed.

The original and verification scores can then be considered together. A substantial difference may indicate that the original result requires further investigation.

However, a discrepancy does not automatically prove dishonesty. Performance can vary because of:

Test anxiety

Fatigue

Illness

Environmental distractions

Technical difficulties

Misunderstanding the instructions

Differences in the conditions

Disability or adjustment needs

Clevry’s psychometric test reports allow employers to view the original and verification results alongside one another, with guidance on what the comparison may suggest and how to proceed.

Verification is particularly useful when ability test performance has a major influence on the hiring decision or when the original score appears inconsistent with other evidence.

7. Measure impression management

Cheating in a personality questionnaire is different from cheating in an ability test. There are no factual answers to search for, so manipulation usually involves presenting an artificially favourable version of oneself.

Our personality questionnaires include a social desirability scale. This can also be added to bespoke personality questionnaires.

The scale considers the candidate’s response style. It can indicate whether someone tends to select answers that create a particularly favourable impression or whether they are more self-critical and willing to acknowledge potential weaknesses.

A higher impression management result does not prove deliberate dishonesty. It may suggest that the candidate is highly conscious of social approval, eager to make a good impression or cautious about disclosing weaknesses. A low result could reflect candour, self-criticism or a less guarded response style.

The scale provides interpretative context. It helps the employer understand how the candidate approached the questionnaire and whether other results should be explored during an interview.

Each questionnaire scale also contains multiple items, using both positively and negatively phrased statements distributed throughout the assessment. Candidates would need to identify which questions relate to which traits, understand how each item is scored and maintain an artificial response pattern across the entire questionnaire.

That is considerably harder than simply choosing whichever answer appears most positive.

Attempts to create an ideal profile can also lead to contradictions. A candidate may try to appear highly decisive in one part of the questionnaire but later choose answers suggesting caution and reluctance to act. A well-designed assessment looks for broader patterns rather than relying on isolated answers.

8. Use follow-up questions in the interview

Psychometric results become more valuable when they inform the next stage of the recruitment process.

If a result appears unusually strong, inconsistent or heavily managed, the interviewer can ask for behavioural evidence. For example:

“Tell me about a time you had to make a decision with incomplete information.”

“Describe a situation where you remained calm under pressure.”

“Give me an example of critical feedback you received and how you responded.”

“What type of work do you find most difficult to sustain?”

“Tell me about a time your usual approach was ineffective.”

Candidates who have answered honestly should usually be able to connect their results to specific experiences. Someone who has constructed an artificial profile may struggle to provide consistent examples.

The interview should not become an interrogation. Its purpose is to test hypotheses, clarify apparent contradictions and understand how the candidate’s traits may appear in the workplace.

Can psychometric test cheating be completely prevented?

No remote assessment can eliminate every opportunity for dishonest behaviour. Candidates may use another device, ask someone nearby for help or attempt methods that browser-based monitoring cannot observe.

The more useful question is whether cheating can be made difficult, detectable and less worthwhile. The answer is yes.

At Clevry we use two complementary lines of defence:

Reduce the candidate’s motivation to cheat by explaining the purpose of the assessment, providing practice materials and creating a fair, transparent experience.

Reduce the likelihood that cheating will succeed through randomised questions, tab activity monitoring, screenshot attempt detection, copy-and-paste controls, impression management measures and verification testing.

None of these signals should be used in isolation. Leaving a tab is not proof of cheating. An unusual personality profile is not proof of manipulation. A lower verification score is not proof that another person completed the original test.

Together, however, these measures give employers a stronger basis for interpreting results and deciding when further checks are appropriate.

Psychometric assessments should support better conversations and more structured decisions. When they are designed carefully and used responsibly, attempts to manipulate them become much less effective.

If you have concerns about a candidate’s assessment results, verification scores, browser activity or impression management profile, our business psychologists can help you interpret the evidence and decide what to do next.

Get in touch and we would be happy to explain more about secure psychometric testing and the anti-cheating measures available through our assessment platform.

“Can candidates cheat on a psychometric test?” As business psychologists, we get this question a lot.
