Technical skills still matter, but they are only part of the picture. The strongest candidates are increasingly those who can stay calm, listen properly, adapt to change, keep learning and remain effective when work becomes difficult.

That is the central theme of our latest H1/2026 Hiring Intelligence Report.

The report looks at the traits organisations are assessing in the first half of 2026 and comparing it witht he same period from 2022 (pre gen-AI) using Clevry assessment data. This gives us a clear before-and-after view of how employer priorities have shifted since the rise of generative AI.

Stress management is now the most assessed trait

The most assessed trait in H1/2026 is Stress Management.

This is one of the clearest signals in the report. Employers are placing greater emphasis on candidates who can cope with pressure, tight deadlines, high workloads and unpredictable situations.

Stress management was already important in 2022, but its rise to the top position suggests it has become a core workplace capability. That makes sense in the current hiring landscape. Many organisations are dealing with increased complexity, fast-moving technology, economic pressure and changing expectations around productivity.

In that context, employers need people who can stay effective when things become intense. The ability to remain productive under pressure is now one of the most visible hiring priorities.

Listening remains a major hiring priority

Listening remains one of the most assessed traits in 2026, holding second place in the rankings.

This matters because it shows that employers still place huge value on interpersonal judgement. AI can generate information quickly, but it cannot replace the human ability to understand context, build trust and respond thoughtfully in real conversations.

Listening is especially important in leadership, management, customer-facing roles, sales, HR and any role that depends on collaboration. People who listen well are more likely to understand what others need, handle difficult conversations and work effectively across teams.

Resilience remains close to the top

Resilient remains firmly in the top three.

This shows that employers continue to value people who can recover from setbacks, handle criticism and keep going when things do not go to plan. Resilience is not a new priority, but its continued position near the top of the ranking suggests it has become a foundational trait in modern hiring.

The rise of stress management does not make resilience less important. It adds to the same wider theme: employers are looking for emotional steadiness.

They want people who can cope with pressure before it overwhelms them and recover when things go wrong.

Calm has become one of the biggest movers

One of the most interesting findings in the report is the rise of Calm.

Calm has moved from 18th position in 2022 to 7th in H1/2026. That is a major increase and one of the clearest signs that employers are assessing emotional composure more often.

Calm describes people who are unlikely to become tense or flustered and who can remain cool in difficult situations.

Employers still want drive and outcome focus

Although emotional steadiness is a major theme, the 2026 data is not only about staying calm.

Striving has moved up the rankings and now sits in the top five. This trait reflects motivation, achievement focus and a preference for work with clear outcomes.

This tells us something important. Employers are not looking for people who are simply relaxed under pressure. They still want people who are motivated to deliver, pursue goals and make progress.

The emerging picture is a balanced one. The most attractive candidates are calm enough to handle pressure, but driven enough to produce results.

That combination is highly valuable in workplaces where people are expected to manage change, handle ambiguity and still perform.

Self-development is now a top 10 trait

One of the strongest AI-related signals in the report is the rise of Self-development.

This trait has moved from 26th in 2022 to 9th in H1/2026. That is a major shift.

Self-development reflects a person’s motivation to improve, take on training and develop new skills. Its rise suggests that employers are increasingly looking for candidates who want to keep learning.

In the AI era, skills can change quickly. A person’s current knowledge is still useful, but it may not be enough on its own. Employers need people who are willing to learn new tools, adapt their approach and keep developing as work changes.

Hiring for learning orientation is therefore becoming a practical workforce strategy. It helps organisations build teams that can evolve rather than become stuck as roles and technologies shift around them.

Some traits are declining in relative popularity

The report also looks at traits that have declined in relative assessment popularity since 2022.

These include Creative, Optimistic, Tenacious and Gregarious.

This does not mean these traits are no longer valuable. It suggests they are being assessed less frequently compared with other traits that have gained momentum.

For example, the decline in Creative may indicate that creativity is being reframed. Employers may still value innovation, but may now assess it through broader traits such as Change, Variety and Self-development.

The decline in Optimistic may suggest a shift from general positivity toward resilience, calmness and realistic performance under pressure.

The fall in Gregarious is also interesting. Listening remains highly assessed, and Poised has grown in popularity. That suggests employers are not moving away from people skills. They may simply be favouring more precise interpersonal qualities over general sociability.

What this means for hiring teams

The H1/2026 data points to a clear conclusion: the human advantage in the AI era is a blend of emotional steadiness, interpersonal judgement, adaptability, motivation, structure and learning orientation.

The most valuable employees are increasingly those who can stay productive under pressure, remain calm in difficult situations, listen well, adapt to different people and priorities, keep learning and stay focused on outcomes.

For hiring teams, this creates an important challenge.

It is no longer enough to assess whether someone has the right technical background or experience on paper. Organisations also need to understand how candidates are likely to behave when work becomes pressured, ambiguous, varied or people-centred.

That is where fair, evidence-based assessment becomes valuable.

A good psychometric test platform can help employers look beyond surface-level claims and identify the traits that are most relevant to performance, culture and long-term potential.

Read the full H1/2026 Hiring Intelligence Report

The full H1/2026 Hiring Intelligence Report explores these findings in more detail, including the top 10 most assessed traits, the fastest-growing traits since 2022 and the traits declining in relative popularity.

It gives HR leaders, recruiters and hiring teams a practical view of how employer priorities are changing in the AI era.

If you want to understand what organisations are really assessing in 2026, and what that means for better hiring decisions, read the full report here.

Artificial intelligence is changing the way organisations hire, but it is not removing the need for human capability.
