A common problem is that trait labels and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clevry.com\/en\/platform\/assessments\/personality-questionnaires\/\">personality questionnaire<\/a> scales can easily sound harsher than intended. A word that is meant to describe a preference can come across like a judgement, criticism, or fixed statement about who someone is. That is where confusion starts. To make feedback clearer and avoid traits being misunderstood, you can apply the following evidence-based practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1) Emphasise the <strong>Self-Report <\/strong>Nature of the results<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYour responses to the questionnaire suggest\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>= Don\u2019t tell someone who they are, tell them what they told us and ask how that sits with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2) Use Tentative Language that is <strong>Suggestive<\/strong>, not <strong>Prescriptive<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt could be that you lean more towards\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou may be more comfortable when\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou might prefer environments in which\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>= Let it land gently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3) Use <strong>Behaviour<\/strong>-Centred Terminology, not <strong>Labels<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Candidates may interpret trait labels as judgements (e.g., Talkative = doesn\u2019t listen, Sensitive = over-emotional). Best-practice approach is to frame traits as <strong>behavioural tendencies <\/strong>or <strong>preferences<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTends to be the one who does the talking in meetings\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPrefers to walk within structured systems processes\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOpts for working alongside others instead of working alone\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>= Avoids being interpreted as capabilities or fixed qualities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4) Remember there are <strong>Positives <\/strong>to Both Ends of the Scale<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Just because the result suggests a candidate is \u2018low\u2019 in something, this doesn\u2019t mean <em>bad <\/em>&#8211; it just means one end of the spectrum over the other. And both ends have positives as well as developmental areas. E.g., Instead of \u201cYou\u2019re not very adaptable\u201d, try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou may prefer clarity and structure and respond well to predictable routines and environments.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>= This reduces defensiveness and presents a balanced understanding of personality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Hint:<\/strong> The developmental area on one end of the spectrum generally tends to be the strength on the other!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5) Bring in the <strong>Strength <\/strong>of that Preference<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not black or white &#8211; it\u2019s a varying degree. Someone may have a slight preference towards one end but they may recognise a bit of both in themself!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>E.g., \u201c\u2026a moderate tendency to rely on existing methods over creating new ones, but at times choosing to invent something fresh.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Clear personality feedback is really about helping candidates interpret their results in a fair and useful way. When feedback is framed carefully, it is less likely to trigger defensiveness or confusion, and more likely to feel accurate and constructive. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The aim is not to box someone in with labels, but to reflect behavioural tendencies in a way that feels balanced, recognisable, and easy to understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Explaining personality traits clearly.
